Q. What does an esthetician do?
Estheticians analyze specific skin type needs, educate clients in home care of their skin and provide regular maintenance using products developed and tested according to the latest standards in skin care. Licensed and trained to know the ingredients and the proper use of these high-quality products, your esthetician will help you choose the products and service most suited to your unique needs.
Q. What are some of the most popular treatments?
Estheticians are best known for giving facials to cleanse and rejuvenate the skin and to also address problems such as acne and dryness. For most people, facials are also a completely relaxing experience of body and mind.
Q. Why do I need the care of an esthetician?
No longer considered "fluff and buff" pampering, taking care of your skin with the assistance of an esthetician is becoming recognized as a fundamental part of an overall wellness plan. Not only can estheticians help you keep your skin healthy and looking fresh, but facial and other skin care treatments are deeply relaxing and rejuvenating.
Q. Why is it important to care for your skin no matter your age?
Your skin is always repairing itself. The outer layer is constantly shedding, and new layers forming. When we are young, our skin's repair mechanisms function efficiently and visible signs of aging are not apparent. As we age, our repair mechanisms slow down. Our skin wrinkles and roughens, age spots appear and pores enlarge. Air pollution and sun exposure contribute to skin damage. In the face of these challenges, we can take care of our skin and ourselves by eating well, exercising and getting sleep.
Q. How many professional treatments will I need?
The number of treatments recommended by your skin care specialist will depend on the condition of your skin at the time of the visit and the results you decide together are possible to achieve.
Q. What is massage therapy?
Massage is an ancient healing art form that can be traced to roots on the African continent. The ancient Hindus, Egyptians and Greeks used forms of massage to relive pain from joint and circulatory issues. The Chinese have written records of massage treatments dating back some 3000 years. In the late 1800s, massage began to evolve into a stand-alone method for treating individuals; that form is known as classic massage or more commonly known as Swedish massage. The aim of this technique is to increase oxygen in the blood and to release toxins from the muscles. Today massage therapy refers to the physical manipulation of muscles, ligaments and connective tissue. It usually includes Swedish massage and deep tissue massage techniques. Massage therapy does not include diagnosis of disease or prescription for treatment of disease. However, massage therapists are trained to recognize certain conditions for which massage is contraindicated and to refer clients to medical doctors or other health professionals when appropriate.
Q. What are the benefits of massage?
Massage therapy has now gained widespread acceptance as a part of integrated health care. It complements conventional medicine in stress reduction, soft tissue relaxation/restoration, and injury/illness prevention. The potential applications of massage therapy are endless. Studies have shown that it can reduce stress, relieve fatigue, soothe tension, facilitate relaxation, and promote a sense of well-being, all of which increase efficient body functioning. Massage has demonstrated benefit in workplace wellness programs by providing muscle relaxation and improving effectiveness of workers. Increasingly, massage is given to babies, the elderly, and the infirm for its health and mood-enhancing effects. In sports, massage is used to enhance performance and assist in injury prevention and repair.
Don’t hesitate to schedule your own massage. Your immune system needs it. Stay well!
Q. Why are there so many different massage techniques?
Just like a mechanic has many different tools, there are dozens of different types of massage therapy and complementary therapies that promote overall well-being. Many varieties of massage have been around for centuries and are rooted in traditional beliefs. Many modern styles of massage use techniques aimed at addressing very specific ailments or conditions. Your massage therapist can help you determine the massage therapy styles and technique that suits you perfectly!
Q. What is a registered massage therapist?
Massage therapy is a regulated health profession. Massage therapists have completed many hours of education at accredited schools and have extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology, assessment, bodywork techniques, and pathology to know when massage is or is not suitable. Every stylist, esthetician and massage therapist on the Personal Best staff is fully trained, experienced and licensed.
Q. How should I dress for a spa appointment?
Dress comfortably. Depending upon the service you want, plan on slipping out of your street clothes and putting on a soft cozy robe. The massage technicians tell their clients to undress to their own comfort level. Everyone will be fully covered during every treatment, most often by a draped sheet. Modesty is to be respected by both technician and client.
For massage, good etiquette dictates cleanliness. Please do not shave right before your treatment. Also, no alcohol. Even drinking the night before (in excess) can have some effect on your massage. Be hydrated and feel free to ask for water if you get thirsty during your visit.
If you are having a pedicure, bring sandals or purchase our little temporary pedicure shoes. If you are having multiple services, we have sanitizable sandals for your use.
